Back in action this summer!

Taylor Hembree

Summer is back in full force. When summer comes along, that means that parents are trying to figure out how to entertain their young ones for a few months without school. Summer camps provide lifelong memories for kids and there’s a plethora of reasons why summer camps are good. These reasons include: self-esteem building, trying new things and thus learning new skills, social development and so much more. Luckily, summer camps are back in person and the Lake Country has lots to offer.

At The Plaza Arts Center, there are three camps throughout the summer.

The first is Camp Broadway. Camp Broadway is in collaboration with The Arts Barn and is for rising 3rd – 8th graders. Campers will explore acting, song, and dance combined with theatre games that hone acting skills and how to engage as an ensemble member. The camp will culminate with a performance for family and friends at the end of the week. This year, Stone Soup is the production that the campers will work on throughout the week. This camp takes place July 11-15 from 12:30-4 p.m. The cost is $150. Registration is online at plazacenter.org.

The next camp is The Plaza’s Art Camp. This camp is a hit every year. Art Camp is for rising 1st – 5th graders. Campers will create new projects daily ranging from basket weaving to painting. There will be lots of outdoor time spent making art in nature. Art Camp is July 18-23 and is $100. Registration is online at plazacenter.org.

And back for the second year, The Plaza and The Arts Barn’s Broadway Intensive is for the older Lake Country youth. The Broadway Intensive culminates in a two-weekend long production. This year the collaboration will be working on Godspell. Godspell is a musical structured as a series of parables, primarily based on the Gospel of Matthew. The parables are interspersed with music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ appearing briefly near the end of the show. The intensive is for young adults ages 15-25 and takes place June 11-23 with performances June 23-July 2. The cost to attend is $300. There are scholarships available for the Broadway Intensive, so please call 706-923-1655 for more information.

Whether looking for a way to further your talents with the Broadway Intensive or wanting to have your little one exposed to art mediums such as collage and clay, The Plaza Arts Center truly has something for every camper this summer.
